Final drive, close or wide ratio 4 speed

Did the original Plus 2 come with a close ratio 4 speed and a 3.77 rear end? Would a wide ratio gearbox restore the lost acceleration caused by changing to 3.55 gears?

This is mostly hypothetical as after we move in the spring my highway use will be greatly reduced

I'm afraid I don't know for sure whether a +2 initial owner could have specced the close box together with a 3.55 diff, all I can tell you is that my S3 S/E SS was specced as such from new, and in my view is all the better for it. I wouldn't have it any other way.
I guess back in the day, you could specify anything provided you were willing to pay !
