STD Frame diff options

PostPost by: Giff » Sun Nov 07, 2021 12:19 pm

Hi,

Are there any diff options that fit the std frame, have an LSD and can handle 180bhp out of the box?

Have been looking at Sierra diff but seems far too large for the std frame.

Thanks!

No need to look at expensive options. The Elan uses an "English" diff used in thousands of Ford Escort Mk1 & 2, Capri, & Mk1 & 2 Cortina rally cars. Just search the usual suspect auction sites for "Escort English axle LSD"
Here's one on Ebay this week, complete with a 3.54 diff

These diffs can handle 180 bhp. The limiting factor will be the diff output shafts, which you should change to the "billet" type available from Elan specialists.

So billet output shafts, casing brace and good to go?

I would say undoubtedly. Also remember that the Elan is so much lighter than the saloon cars that the diff was originally made for. In the 70's and early 80's, I used to road rally Escort Mk1's, in Mexico, Twincam & RS2000 form. I had several, all of which had the English axle, with the same LSD, and never had any issues with any of them. The Twink was roughly 150bhp, and the RS2000 about 165. Never bust a half-shaft either. The extra lightness of the Elan will more than make up for the increased HP that you're planning.

Add a Quaife LSD which is a bolt in and you are good to go...

+1 on going to the billet output shafts with high horsepower, and don't forget the Sprint type brace that ties the two upper mounting points together.

I would also add you might want the later S4 alloy diff housing with the "square" back and "bobbin" upper ears to have the strongest total package possible.

Thanks for the advice, both on the diff itself, output shafts and the later casing.

Combined with some stronger mountings and the brace this looks like an achievable package.
