If those are on an Elan (Not a Plus 2) have they been fitted with a Drop Restrictor ?? If not it could be that someone has jacked the car up and then rotated the wheel, the aluminium part that has cracked is part of the CV Ball retainer, just my suggestion !!

The shafts are on an Elan - what do the drop restrictors look like? I take it they prevent full travel?- if it's part of a bearing carrier it will no doubt need to be replaced. Has anyone experienced this before?- if you click on the picture you see the whole picture.
Thanks

The crack looks to have developed where the stud is screwed into the adaptor plate, or is it a recessed head bolt of some sort fitted to the plate? In any event that is the thinnest and most heavily load part of the plate. Is the plate Aluminium or steel I have seen both used.
It would guess it could have cracked just because of misalignment between the stud and the diff drive shaft hole as these were not precisely tolerance by Lotus as the Donuts did not require a precise hole location but the adaptors do. You often need to ream the holes to get acceptable fit of the adaptor bolts
I would replace the cracked adaptor plate and check the fit of the others
cheers
