Prop Shaft Balance

I have just renewed both UJs' on my Elan propshaft but forgot to mark the flange position to reassemble it the same way as originally. What's the consencus on balancing? Is it really necessary, particularly on such a relatively short shaft.

It should not need rebalancing.

I recently fitted new UJs to my prop and had it balanced (just to be safe). I did'nt know if it was unbalanced before but it was slightly out and re-weighted. For ?38 + vat it was worth the peace of mind.

I would have it balanced. I did not when I did mine way back when and I had a vibration that was felt right between the two seats just back of the arm rest pad. Took me a heck of a long time to get that sorted. I had it balanced 3 times by a local shop but did not get it sorted till I took it out and had it dynamically balanced at a truck service place.

By the way, I figured out how to remove the propshaft from the front, under the tranny and bell housing. You take the bolts off the diff, remove the bolt under the tranny mount. Use a jack to raise the tranny and you can slip the propshaft out from the front.

Got to the point where I could get the propshaft out in about 20 minutes.

William if it is on an ?lan the prop is so short I suspect you will be OK but a +2 may be more of a problem
