Crown Wheel and Pinion

PostPost by: Brian Walton » Thu Aug 10, 2006 10:29 pm

This unit was found in the boot of my rally Elan. It came with the car. Is there anybody out there who might recognize its origin. It works out as 4.37:1 ratio. It appears brand new.

Photo attached.

Brian. There were quite a number of different ratios available for the "English" differential. Some at 5.1:1 were fitted to small Ford trucks and have been used by Elan drivers and others who do things like hill climbs (see crown wheel & pinion offered on ebay - item 250016377933).

The only thing about the photo of yours is that to me the pinion appears way to long for use in an Elan differential?

Well I cant tell you what it is but I can tell you what it isnt, it is not for an Elan Ford "English diff" or a Salisbury type (sometimes known as Borg Warner)
I think it might be for something like Zephyer or Zodiac (but pure guess though)
I'm busy with an English diff now and as can be seen from the pic its nothing like it.

Brian
Just as an aside what are you doing with your diff (am in the process of fitting a quaife L.S.D.)

Nothing exciting John, I've got a clicking in the diff so I'm fixing up a 3.5 to replace the 3.7
Thought I'd fit a set of cv shafts that I made up a while ago at the same time.

Why? are you doing competition/track days or expecting a bad winter in Derbyshire

No.it's just that when exiting side roads I'm a little fed up with the tyre squeel
And it may help with winter traction...

I'm contemplating diffs at the moment. My car had a 3.55 from the factory & when rebuilt the "person" (please insert your own expletive) fitted a 3.7 which has spoiled the car somewhat. I believe there is a 3.4 or so Ford Diff available which on 80 profile tyres should give about 19.5mph/1,000. Is this so? I would rather go this route with a 4 speed than go through the 5 speed trauma - plus the original box is so nice to use.

And then don't forget to re-calibrate the speedo drive cogs in the tail shaft housing....

Given the length of the input shaft and slots and grooves on the shaft for location of drive gears I would guess its out of a transaxle of some kind.

John,

The car has the 3.55 speedo gears anyway and it used to overread a bit. It now overreads quite a lot so the 3.4 ish ratio may get it spot on!
