Stock exhaust manifold to downpipe are NLA?

PostPost by: tdskip » Wed Oct 07, 2020 1:20 pm

80% done, 80% to go sort of troubleshooting now...

I called Dave Bean on some missing bits, including the exhaust gasket that goes between the exhaust manifold and the downpipe, and they said I'd have to fabricate one.

They also suggest that most people will convert to headers eventually. I don't think they are trying to sell anything here, certainly that hasn't been my experience dealing with them.

Give the above, any thoughts on where to from here? Suggestions on the header?

Tom,

I think I have a spare down pipe from my Europa spares. Send me an email if you want to go the stock route.

I think there are male and female pipe ends. PMS and SJ Sportscars have them, but on the wrong side of the pond.

Hi, Tom. I might have the federal exhaust manifold and down pipe from my S4. Are these what you are looking for? Wont be at my shop to take life and limb carefully into the 27 foot Lotus storage container till Thurs. Cheers. Mike, in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Thanks for the responses and offered to help.

Looks like do need to source the gasket the goes between the federal manifold and the OEM downpipe. I have the downpipe, so "just" need to track down the gasket.

Thanks!

Yep - nailed it.

I did some searching and it looks like DIY is an option, but would be the first time for me.

I don't think there ever was an OEM gasket for this joint. I seem to remember a comment in the 1970s edition of the service manual that the joint had to be made up with exhaust paste. Anyone else remember that?

Huh - well that makes it much easier I suppose.

I am humbled on a daily basis with how much you all know, and how supportive everyone has been.

Thank you.

Went to a local well stocked autoparts store but nothing that looked to meet the need here as far as exhaust paste / gasket maker.

Wondering if it is worth the time to use the Mr Gasket material to fabricate one?

Skip, that is what I would do.... make a paper template, then use a stanley knife to cut the gasket material.
