Custom vs Stock Exhaust replacement

Morning All,

Another day another job to do on the Lotus. I need to change the exhaust on my early (transverse) Elan+2. The Current mild steel system has various repairs between the Y piece and Silencer. I also have a hole in the bottom of the manifold.

I did a reasonable amout of reseach and decided to replace the manifold with a stock cast iron unit. There where a number of reasons that i went down that route. 1) Fit - I have heard that replacement parts can be tricky to fit. 2) Stainless steel manifolds are liable to cracking 3) Cost - I picked up a decent cast iron manifold for lesss than 1/2 the price that any of the usual suspects are charging.

My question is about the exhaust. With regard to stock stainless replacements from the usual suspects, i have found that my choice is limited when it comes to transverse silencers, bore size etc. I would basically be replacing like for like (albeit without the mends and holes). Thats fine but i'm wondering if i would benefit from a custom system?

Many classic car systems sold through specialist dealers are made by GES in Devon http://www.gsexhausts.co.uk/p/products. I have one of their systems on my MGB V8 and it is very good quality.

Regarding custom exhaust manifolds, I have a set on my Sprint. I don't know who made them or sold them as they came with the car, but the manifolds are very fiddly to fit, and the angle of the pipe leaving the head face is such that a couple of the nuts are almost impossible to fit. A poor design in my opinion. I'll get a photo and post it later.
