Zetec Plus 2 exhaust

PostPost by: PeterK » Mon Sep 30, 2013 12:29 pm

For those running Zetec engines in their Plus 2s, what exhaust system have you used ?

I have the later body (longitudinal silencer) and a Spyder manifold, so it looks like I could use a 1.7m straight length (57mm / 2.25" diameter), a medium (420/470mm) long oval silencer box and a couple of bends to join the two together (approx. 180mm offset).

Is there a recommended silencer box
Have you needed a mid point silencer (I've heard mention of MGB mid-boxes being used)
Is there anyone who does this as a package
Did you use stainless or mild steel (my local tyre & exhaust man doesn't like st/st as in his experience it cracks too often)

Thx
Peter

Peter

My S1 (1600) came to me factory direct - seat belts were not supplied by Lotus at the time. I installed lap belts altho the mounting points are as you describe can be used for 3 point belt attachments.

My +2 zetec has the Spyder manifold and their recommended supplied system that comes complete with a centre silencer. Apparently from experience it's okay to run without the centre silencer as there is no noise restriction for vehicles of the +2's vintage in the UK, but it will drone and be annoying on long journeys.

At Castle Combe my car always fails the noise test at 102db static at 4000rpm (the limit is 100db) so I need to fit a tail pipe extension silencer for going out on track. It's unlikely I could make it pass without the centre silencer.

My system doesn't have any bends, just straight through from the manifold, although I can't remember if the inlet to the rear silencer is offset to compensate, I will take a picture on the weekend as I need to weld the sacrificial skid plate back to manifold as it has become loose and is vibrating.
Kindest regards
