Exhaust gasket question

PostPost by: cal44 » Mon Nov 26, 2012 11:18 pm

I am going to, and here we go, "assume" that a stock exhaust manifold for an Elan and a TC Europa are the same? I have several Europa manifolds but no Elan to compare.

Here is my problem. I am going back to a stock manifold on the Eruopa which has the three manifold studs at the bottom where the down pipe connects. I cannot find a gasket for that union. The two major suppliers here in the U.S do not have them and will not be ordering them.

I tried making one from the the gasket material that has metal on one side.........it ended up looking like a head on collision. Unless it can be stamped out.......it ain't happenin'.
I do have the copper sealer in a tube that goes to 700 degrees........but I'm thinking that isn't going to cut it.

Got any tips?

Regards,
mike

How about bolting the gasket material between two pieces of plywood before you start cutting it out ?
Then you can use whatever grinders/drills/Dremels you like without it all disintegrating

Try making one out of solid copper. The copper is reasonably easy to cut and makes a very good and strong gasket. You have to anneal (soften)the copper after making the gasket. That is heat it to cherry red and let it cool naturally. When fitting use some of your 700 degree sealer. You can get small pieces of copper sheet off eBay. This really makes a good job and is easily done. Give it a go.

If you're talking about a metal and asbestous donut they used to be common as dirt in all sizes.

I'd get a rough measurement and find a decent parts guy that can find things other than what comes up on a screen!

Here are some Elan manifold pics to compare and as I recall the Europa is the same.
I asked a similar question in this thread:
elan-f14/exhaust-gasket-s3se-t22784.html
I just used a piece of "exhaust material" which was easy to cut as it was just like thick cardboard, also used RTV Blue and it was fine.

Thanks to you all. Very helpful.
It appears the Elan and TC Europa use the same manifold.

hi Anthony,
sorry to say this, but to anneal copper you heat it then quench in water to cool down quickly. I think you have got mixed up with heat treating steel

Hi Alan
Yes you are right but the copper can also be air-cooled instead of by water, but it will not be as soft and malleable after it has been annealed.

Well, as usual, my ignorance was showing in my first post!

I'd like to suggest, however, that if the previous solutions were not enough that the gasket material used between cylinder heads and manifolds on most equipment is metal reenforced.

If one knew a good repair shop you may be able to piece one together from perhaps a tractor manifold gasket.
