S3 rear silencer - Dimensions please

Hi All,

The S3 rebuild continues apace - I will post some pictures shortly.

Today?s pressing question is how much space is there for a silencer under an S3 boot floor - I want to put a straight silencer in as for the S4/sprint but appreciate that won't fit.

I have the S4 in the garage but the S3 is some distance away and came minus the exhaust.

I think that the difference is in the rear valance (please correct me) How long can the silencer be and how long does the tailpipe need to be?

I've never had an S3 but doesn't the exhaust go around the houses before emerging?

No idea if the following comment is at all useful but Tony Thompson sells a glass-fibre silencer "tunnel" (for want of a better word) which allows his fatter silencer to fit and of course would allow a smaller straight silencer too. It's like the one you have on your S4 but deeper.

Yep, all round the houses - All round the houses is difficult or expensive, straight is cheap and easy.

I don't want to cut the bodywork - I went off bodywork doing the S4!

Brian's last photo is what my original S3 muffler looked like with a wrap around tail pipe setup. The tail pipe caused the muffler to sit lower and drag the ground in my driveway. I replaced it with a larger one that had the inlet and outlet on the same side. The muffler shop welded the other end shut. That allowed the muffler to be lifted up and fit the designed opening much better. The body cavity for the exhaust tail pipe exit is smaller than the S4 opening.
I used a heat reflective insulation shield that protected the fiberglass body. I also attached a larger resonator tail pipe that cut the harsh back off bark without restricting the exhaust flow. It did not cost much and has a great sound.
Pictures are the original, a finished view and shows the full clearance.
I think it was a DynoFlow.

I'm assuming that the front edge of the Exhaust is the same for S3 and S4.

What I need to know is the distance from the front edge of the rear valance to the reat edge of the bumper - ie how long is the tailpipe.

Simon this maybe of some use! The tail pipe is 385mm from its end to the centre of the box, if you need more dimensions let me no. Photos rear box for a late S3

Hi Peter. When I replaced the original muffler I could only get a stain-less one. I just checked with Dave Bean Engineering and he has them in stock all made up. If you look at Brian's picture, Dave Bean welds on an extension that has another 90 bend and attaches to the main supply pipe. He calls it a S pipe making it easier to attach to the S3's. It cost $295.00.
I later replaced mine with the new system as shown in my earlier post. The shop had my Elan on a lift and placed the muffler on a stand to hold it in place. By not having the S pipe that wrapped around the original muffler they were able to move the new one forward and up for excellent ground clearance. While in place they attached hangers to the muffler and used the original body attachment points. The total installed price was about 1/3 less than an original one. Make sure you insulate the body as it is closer. It may not be necessary but I did it anyway with insulated heat reflective foil with a self adhesive backing. if you look at the photo you'll see I even insulated a portion of the exhaust tail pipe extension.

Sorry Peter can?t help. I?ve had this for some years, think I got it from Donington auto jumble. This one is for a late S3 the early cars have the extra bend as sarto mentions.
