PostPost by: hartley hare » Wed Dec 08, 2010 10:21 am

hi there,
could anyone tell me if there is a bracket or some sort of support for the exhaust system, around the y piece / bell housing area ? as my first ones are at the silencer itself..this seems a long run without any support..is this normal ?
if not are these available or do they need to be made up? car is a 73 s130....

many thanks in advance......

There should be a support bracket on the rear of the gearbox. Don't know if the +2 is the same but have a look at this thread there are some pics which may help....

Yes, The +2 is the same, at least with the 4 speed gearbox. I am not sure if an equivalent pair of pieces was made for the Lotus 5 speed. At any rate this bracket is important to take loads off of the exhaust manifold at the cylinder head.

I have just finished making exhaust for my car 7312 and the only support for the pipe is front and rear of the silencer.I looked at fittinga bracket but not enough room with 5 speed Isuzu gearbox, so have kept to original design.

I cannot remember such a bracket on my +2. Ir there provision on the Spyder chassis for such a bracket?

Does anyone have a photo of the bracket in situ on a +2. I would like to see it. I am running KKK stainless headers.

Hi Bob,
The bracket attaches to the rear of the gearbox not the chassis - it mounts on 2 of the tailshaft housing bolts-so it does not matter what chassis you have. There are some pictures in the previous thread which I posted a link to above, it's an S4 shown but as Russ says the +2 is the same - assuming of course that you have a 4 speed gearbox.

Hi,

I have just fitted my exhaust back onto my car and it did'nt have the bracket by the gearbox. I had heard of this bracket and was thinking about making one. When I checked the workshop manual it only shows it with the earlier exhaust system with the transverse silencer and as I have the later type I didnt bother.

As above - the bracket near the Y piece was fitted with the transverse silencer but not with the later in line silencer - dont know the logic but that seems to be the case.

I posted a page from the Lotus workshop manual shoing the two types that can be seen here

Hi all. I had similar concerns and bought a bracket from Sue Miller. Very nice, but it didn't fit my type 9 gearbox - not Sue's fault - the bolts on the tail of the box are different. So, I made a template, drew it up, and John from this forum, who happens to live quite close and be part of an engineering company, made me the bracket in stainless. It fits a treat, and I used the bit that fits round the Y piece from Sue's bracket to complete the assembly. So if you have a standard 5 speed I think she can help you out. I was quite concerned about the load on the manifold studs without a bracket by the tail of the box, but it's all supported now.

Regards.

The parts list for the Elan shows a hanger and bracket that would be close to the "Y" piece, but the +2 list does not show such an arrangement. I'm sure there would be no problem to fit them if you think it necessary.
BTW, my car does not have them.
