Elan S2 Original Mufflers

PostPost by: Apataki » Thu Dec 03, 2009 10:23 pm

I know the Lotus factory came up with a different style of muffler for the S3 which I guess they expected everyone to retrofit when there original S1 and S2 mufflers needed replacement. However, I would like to fit the old style muffler where the exhaust pipe inlet and exit are located on the same end of the canister. Is anyone making a replacement muffler in the old S1-S2 muffler style? Does any know of muffler current being made that will fit in the S2 muffler recess and has the inlet and exit located on the same end of the canister?

Where are you? I understand that there are some Magnaflow mufflers (US) that will work, but I can't be sure.

I'm in San Jose, CA. I have looked at the Magnaflow website. They do have a muffler with inlet and exit on the same end, but it is suppose to be 18" long and the openings are for 2 1/2" pipe. I would like to get my hands on one to check it out, but haven't found anyone with one on their shelf and I am not prepared to order one out of curiosity.

Hi, I have a stainless stock style muffler on my S3. But the stock bends in the pipe pushes the muffler back to the end of the muffler opening area. Johnny Franklin can tighten the bends in the pipe to center the muffler so that it sits in the middle of the opening which means it is not as exposed or fits closer to the body. I currently use self adhesive heat shielded foil insulation to protect the fiber glass body
If bending the pipes does not work for any reason, he carries Magnaflow that the intake and the outlet are on one side and he will adapt the attachment points to fit our cars.
I have been working with Johnny Franklin Muffler for years in Santa Rosa CA. Ask for Bob (A good man) and mention my name with the green lotus. He is very reasonable. He welded up a bung extension for my tail pipe to test my webers with Keith.
See the photo, it shows how low the muffler is and it has room to move up about 2 inches and not drag or touch in driveways. Just can't stop spending???

Here'e the writeup and photos.

I avoid the whole "muffler bottoming" problem by fitting a Stebro straight-through muffler. But they're not as easy to find as they once used to be.

Stebro is still in business in Ottawa. They provided a straight through muffler for me a while back.

That's where I got my latest one - but it wasn't easy, especially since I sort of had to beg them for mounting hardware, and they didn't give me the 1 1/2" inlet that I wanted, so I had to work with adfapters. And the price was not to be sneezed at.

Hi Phil & all, Phil thanks for you photos. The ground clearance is hard to tell in our photos and angles, if I would gain any more clearance using a one-sided Dyno-flow. Until I measured my stock stainless muffler, the Dyno-flow is thicker at 4 1/4 and the lotus stock muffler is about 3 3/8 and is shorter by a inch or two. So as long as I don't switch to the larger dyno-flow type and keep what I have and just have the shop weld in a new tighter bend to what I have, I could lift the muffler about another 1 1/2 closer to the body. The current sound is great, quiet at idle and can hear the webers when on it. I did add an over sized resonator tip to the end which mellowed the back off bark. Phil I also used the heat shield insulation and Quiet car coatings everywhere and it was a big help. But I did not do the back shelf. Thanks for the idea and I'll insulate from the bottom of the shelf. Is that how you did it?
Johnny Franklin is also the dealer for Dyno flow. He makes what ever is needed to attach the brackets and muffler for very little.

Thanks Mike, now if I can just left the muffler up a little and hide the shiny part that shows. I'll post the detailed pictures if I can do it.

Hi Apataki

I am building a muffler now. I am using a stock Walker muffler that you can buy at your local parts store. It has the in and out on the same side, just like the S2 mufflers. Walker # 27027 1 3/4" ID inlet 1 7/8" ID outlet 4 5/8" thick 13" long and 10" wide. The bends are using mandrel bent pipe from a headers kit. It fits in my S3 SS very nice.

Hi guys, I did change the muffler to match Phil's and looks like Bill's muffler but thinner. As it turned out, when I inspected my stock stainless muffler, I had scraped a hole almost all the way through. It was time to change out my newest muffler. Johnny Franklin had a quality muffler the was thin like the original one and had three hole which he blocked off the intake so that the intake and outlet are on the same side. I was able to raise it up almost 2 inches and moved it back about 2 inches closer to the axle and still used the original attaching suspension points. Now the muffler is almost hidden and should clear the driveway without touching and is a little quieter. The muffler, new pipe, welded and installed was $181.00 after taxes and took a little over an hour. I'll post pictures in day light tomorrow. It should fit all S1,2,3 and 4's that have the recess areas.

We NorCal guys know our mufflers!
Thank goodness there are still muffler shops that love to take on challenges..
