Replacing exhaust studs

PostPost by: Grizzly » Sun Sep 28, 2014 11:11 am

Have you tried Grub screws? When i fitted my exhaust i used them because they have an Allen key cut out in the end which makes fitting and removing them so much easier.

Having stripped a alloy head with a poorly lined up exhaust manifold in the past  i wouldn't use Bolts in alloy unless its helicoiled but if its only getting fitted/removed once in a blue moon it would work.

I buy mine from the local industrial bolt store. If you search you will find one close to you I think. Use ball ended long allen keys to screw then in

Rohan,
for me it's also 41 Years with Lotus engines but always i use studs for the exhaust manifold.
Maybe it's a personal choice

I'm with Rohan on using reduced size headed bolts. Only I use twelve point bolts, rather than socket head cap screws. A 5/16" twelve point socket, with a 1/4" drive extension and wrench will provide adequate torque without fear of stripping threads from the cylinder head.

I also find that the twelve point bolts work wonders for starter securing bolts, as well as those used for the engine mounts. Small wrench, easy access. Twelve point 5/16" and 3/8" sockets are much smaller than their 1/2" or 9/16" equivalent. A twelve point socket on a twelve point bolt offers excellent purchase and easy alignment.

Or just use a hacksaw !

Prezactly!

I bought a new set of exhaust studs, then I measured how much thread i REALLY needed for the brass nut and its washer. Then I cut the new studs down to that length.

Result, much easier to fit the exhaust manifolds onto the head.

Guess I'm the only cheap ba*tard here.
I brazed the original nuts to the studs about 30 years ago.
If they give trouble, some time before I die that is, I guess I'll have to get the helicoils out.
