Exhaust Coat??

PostPost by: nomad » Thu Jan 21, 2016 6:50 pm

I'm thinking of getting my header ceramic coated by Swain tech in NY.
Anyone have experience or recommendation's?

I'm looking to reduce engine compartment temps and increase the longevity and appearance of the header.

I've used Performance Coating in Auburn WA ( near Seattle) they do a great job and are reasonable. They recommend the titanium gray for better heat protection rather than the chrome silver.

I just got a quotation from Jet Hot (NC & OK) to do my Headers (Exhaust Manifolds) of $200 plus return shipping.

David Porter had his headers done by them & they look really nice.

Their web site is at http://www.jet-hot.com/

Jet Hot did mine a couple of years ago. Definitely cooled things off under the bonnet and has been surprisingly stain resistant. Dan

Dan, any before / after pictures?

My headers are mild steel & have done about 2,000 miles... they say they can do them no problem...

I've got Zircotec on the exige. It seems to work very well. Supercharged exhausts get extremely hot. It's been on for 3 years and no sign of fatigue.

I checked into "Jet Hot" and they do very nice work but Swain tech claim there main forte is keeping the heat down. Claim to have a lot of experience with Nascar. They only do white but that is my favorite anyway. Those others I haven't heard of before.

I had my headers for my S1 ceramic coated black by jet hot. Keeps the heat down and protects the headers from rusting.

I happen to have another set of headers that I had jet coated white that I'm looking to sell. Brand new, never used.

I think the coating is great for a road car. I had a set of 304ss headers coated inside and out. One caution though, my fabricator said that weld repair is very difficult even if you remove all the coating.

I had my exhaust header done by a local company, Olympic Coatings. Had them coat both the outside, as well as the inside. For the inside to work, the header has to be operating room clean, otherwise the coating will not adhere to the metal. From my perspective, it would have been best to start with a new system. Mine has been on the car for 10 years, titanium in color, and it looks as good as the day I put it in service.

The only negative I experienced, was some warping from the cleaning process, which was sand blasting. Required some bending to get the holes in the in the flanges to align with the studs in the head. The alignment issue was not severe, but did take some time to get it to fit to my satisfaction. I do not believe this would have been an issue, if the header had been new and not well used, but little rust.

Phil, my old header was cracked, so I purchased a new one and had it sent directly to jet hot. So no before after shot. I bought the header directly from the manufacturer (http://www.kirkracing.com/) who is in Alabama, so the price was very good. You want it not painted. Ray carries the same header, but it is painted. That would be my recommended approach. Dan

I think my headers came from Ray & the paint was burnt off a long time ago..

JimJ Says:

"Yes but, and please don`t think of this as a criticism, just an observation, American tastes tend to be a little more, shall we say?........

I note on the post re. coating the exhaust manifolds (headers) only American owners have replied. I`ve never seen a UK Elan with a coated exhaust other than the silver heatproof paint which isn`t and soon disappears.
Jim"

So you prefer this:

Rusty manifold..

limerock50th_2013_09_01_035.jpg and
Jet-Hot coated

The Jet hot coating also ejects more heat down the exhaust rather than heating up the engine bay. Remember this was an issue with later elans, hence the holes & mesh in the inner fender.

I don't doubt that it's effective but I'm with Jim that I can't recall seeing many in this country that have had this done.

Well, in general, England has a cooler climate and getting all the heat one can out of the engine bay, I would say, probably isn't t priority. Lots of folks claim it's a great help while others claim that a lot of the treatments are "snake oil".[ American slang alluding to the traveling medicine shows of the 19th century! :D ]
