Silencer very very silent, BUT

PostPost by: el-saturn » Sat May 30, 2015 5:41 pm

this is the final product "in situ" as they used to say in northhampton UK. i guess i overdid it: it?s way too silent BUT i don?t think the power changed or any other parameters. i did however want to come down in dbs and that it did. as u see A L L of the space (plus some) is used to the last 1/4 inch -- I wanted the large radi and the internals arent much of a issue and of course the issue was to keep the fumes flowing! wonder what u folks say. sandy with his alpine exhaust system.

? Is there some of this post missing. Do you describe what you have done elsewhere? I would be interested to read about what you have done to your silencer. I think mine is empty of wadding and sounds like an empty can amplifying the noise. I am thinking of sawing it in half and re stuffing it. Making it into a repack able one. What did you do?

OK I found the original post I think (is this it?)

Would be great to read/see any other details about this. I don't want to change the pipe size on mine just open it up and repack it. How did you open up yours? Do you have any pictures / diagrams of the internal design?

hi there - i bought this glass wool or synthetic wool on german ebay. i opened both sides, grinding 2inch holes (both sides) to get the wool in there: i rolled them and used a ery large screwdriver to fit them left and right plus a bit on the top and bottom. i then fitted the perforated 2" tube with a outer tube (+4mm dia) at the end of the muffler to prevent having all of the wool coming out. i lost at least 10db!! and it looks real cool! sandy

Looks nice, but how do clearances to GRP compare to the original? Looks real close in the back and next to the outlet pipe, and old polyester resin does a very good job of burning once ignited.

I'd recommend getting it good and hot and measuring the temperature of the surrounding GRP with one of those laser thermometers and seeking a conservative maximum like 100c. There are a number of insulation options any of which would be preferable to watching your Elan create its own funeral pyre in the event that you have the hot spots I fear you might.
