Italian exhaust silencer

When I bought my Elan in 1977, a PO had already replaced the silencer (or muffler, as we call it), so I never had an original system on the car. I've since tried various non-factory substitutes, including a shortened Cherry Bomb muffler from the US.
Some time ago, I installed a silencer from Tony Thompson Racing. I never warmed up to it, however, as the round section didn't fit or complement the cut-out in the rear valance of my S4.
I used to ride a motorcycle then and had a Ducati 748R. From new, I replaced the bike's silencers with carbon-fiber equivalents. I kept the original mufflers in my storage bin and later thought one might just fit the Elan. These mufflers are beautiful, made in Italy by Termignoni I believe. They have lightweight stainless steel ends and aluminum casings. However, they were made for a small engine, so I decided to open one up to see what I could do with it. Here is the interior - gorgeous.
I cut apart TTR's muffler and used its perforated inner pipe and fiberglass packing in the Termignoni. I had to have pipes bent and welded in to fit, but I like the end product. It fits well, is very light, and is beautiful (or so I think).
It sounds really good, too!

Maybe this belongs in the mods section but maybe it does not matter any more. I grabbed these out of the dumpster 10 or more years ago for the the reason that they were free and thought that if they worked on a liter plus cycle then they might work ok on an Elan. I read this post and thought, "I have them some place", the mental file card system kicked in and there they were right under the the Ford Small blocks on the cart in the garage. I wiped them down with a bit of acetone and they look like they may work on the sow's ear chassis. Thanks for reminding me, great topic.

iirc, to fit the TT silencer, one has to cut out the "exhaust tunnel" and glass in a larger one, which TT conveniently sells!
Your solution looks extremely elegant.

Thanks, Pete, all,
Russ, I would describe the sound as throaty and very sporty, but not ear-splitting at all. I expected it to be louder and higher pitched, but pleasantly that was not the case. I'll measure over the weekend and post.

Russ, the Ducati muffler is 42.5 cm long, and the oval ends are 10cm by 13cm. The photo shows it better. It is a very light silencer.
Best,
Andy
