S4 silencer brackets

Can anyone please take a photo of the two silencer brackets that attach it to the boot floor. I also want to know where they are located or how far the twin tailpipes extend beyond the rear bumper.

I have an 68' S4, but have fitted a Sprint muffler (single box, single upswept outlet). The Sprint muffler is attached front and rear. The bracket that Gary shows, in the previous post, is the rear bracket and the muffler hangs from this via a reinforced rubber strap.
The correct S4 muffler (double box, double straight outlets) is longer and is attached at the rear only (the front is supported by the centre exhaust pipe). The bracket is the same as the rear bracket on the Sprint. A doubler plate or a couple of large penny washers should be used on the inside of the boot floor to spread the load of the rear bracket.
Can't help you on how far the double box pipes protrude beyond the rear of the car.
I was thinking about fitting the double box to my S4, but believe they are fairly noisy.
The parts book, if you have one, shows what is needed for each installation.

Hi Alex, it looks like your car is an S3 that had the silencer across the car & not inline & that you have a straight through replacement. The S4 has a straight through with 2 tailpipes & the boot floor I believe is different from the S3. The mountings do look like the ones shown in the parts book though.
The stainless silencer I have from Falcon (purchased a number of years ago) does not have any mounting bracket for the front support so that is one of the things tath was confusing me.
Gary, I assume that the two holes for the rear bracket that you have sent photos of are for attaching to the bodey & the sigle is for the hanging strap?
Any photos of the twin pipe exhaust silencer in place would be appreciated.

Nope! Its a Sprint. 1973 car. No tranvers box ever... Sorry. The mountings are correct for the car..

The pictures supplied by Gary illustrate the original S4 rear silencer mounting and as you correctly surmise the two bolts fit the bracket to the boot floor (with something to spread the load on the inside as has been suggested) and the single hole supports a short exhaust strap.

On the OE S4 silencer (with twin boxes and tail pipes) this is the only mounting on the silencer.

If you don't have original holes to guide you, the tailpipes need to extend just beyond the rear of the car to minimise fumes being pulled in but only a bit otherwise they present a potential hazard to you and others.

Thanks for all the replies & all is now clear. I think I still have the original albeit rusty rear bracket. I'll make a stainless one to replace it.

The problem with the S4 twin box only being held at the back, and the centre pipe being held as far forward as the gearbox, is that it dips in the middle and hence the 'exhaust scraping' recent thread. I'm going to fabricate something to offer the centre pipe some support at the back, frowned upon by the perfectionists, perhaps.
The strap used on the back bracket is fairly easy to locate. I've just replaced mine for a couple of pounds. PM me if you are struggling and I'll gets some pics. The Elan is not over the pit at the minute and it would take some moving of other vehicles.

PPS , yes the twin straight through box is loud, very loud. In fact 106db static at 1m at a Goodwood noise test.
Much as I'd love to track the Elan, it's too loud, but I love the exhaust note too much to change it

Not sure what others think but I'd stick with MS, I find stainless has a tendency to fracture if there is any chance of vibration

This is my S2 exhaust hanger, My friend gave me 100 foot dog run when I got Beauregard and well, lets just say he's not happy hound on a wire so I put about 16 inches to use with a single cable clamp and an extra wrap around the pipe to center it and it just works. The only other support is the header in front with a aircraft style mufler clamp. Its a shit bag application - but like I said, it works and it was free and how much better does it get than that.
