Exhaust heat shield

I obtained a used heat shield off Ebay a cuple of months ago as my car came without one.
I was alarmed to find that the shield was in very poor condition (not as described) and was delaminating with bits of asbestos mill board lying about when I opened the box and both sides of the shield flapping about. I should have given the seller and severe sanction but thought better of it
I have seen the dimpled aluminium 'heat shield' material sold by Demon Tweeks et al which may provide a solution - has anyone used this to good effect?
Alternatively I could make a new one with some thin ally riveted together with fibreglass fabric between. Bit of a faff though?
I do wonder if it actually does much anyway on a mildly tuned TC.
What have other done? Is it necessary?

I presume you are talking baout the heat shield between the body and the muffler at the rear in a plus 2.
I still use the orginal one which appears to be in Ok condition on mine. i have seen the dimpled aluminum sandwich sheet and it looks like a good replacement and i would probably use it if i needed to replace the +2 panel
An alternative and what i use on my Elan is flexible heat shielding - this uses an aramid fibre woven material with a aluminum foil facing. I stick it on the body between te exhaust and mufller in the Elan and also between the headers and the footwell fibre glass. I use high temperature silicone sealant to stick it on ( Loctite red). It can be bought in sheets from most race supply shops in Australia like the Rigid aluminium heat shielding.

There are several ways to approach this.......in my limited mind. First do it yourself, or have a sheet metal shop make one using the piece o' junk one you have. If it were me and we are using the area under the muffler, I like spacers/washers between the sheet metal and the body. This provides the ability of air between the both.
Similar too the heat barrier on the old Land Rover roofs.
Or, two sheets with glass cloth in the middle riveted together.

Guys,
I cut and fitted the new shield last night. It seems like a very good material, if only embossed aluminium sheet, but it cuts and forms nicely.
I fixed it with stainless set screws and washers - I placed a nut between the underside of the car and the shield at each fixing point to provide an air gap.
I am pleased with the results and happy to get rid of the asbestos fibre emitting original

I have used some of this to protect the footwell from the exhaust manifold. A bit expensive, but works pretty well & I was suckered by the special show price a few years ago....
