starter and header questions

PostPost by: reynard » Sun Jan 17, 2010 3:09 pm

Hi,

I am about to put the engine and transmission back together on my1971 Plus 2 and had a couple of questions.

I wondered if I should flip the ring gear as the car had been fitted with a Super-Starter and the gear on the starter engages the ring gear from the opposite side of the flywheel. It worked okay before I decided to restore the car, and I hate to try and apply logic to what is magic, but thought I would get the benefit of your experinces.

Also, I am trying to reduce the under-hood temperatures so I have had the headers coated with a high temperture powder coating made for this purpose. Has anyone had any experience using header wrap with this type of coating? I know that header wrap shortens the life of uncoated and even painted headers, but hoped that with the coating protecting the headers and helping with the heat that the header wrap would be less destructive over the long term.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,
Andy

I think the only way to get the ring gear off is to cut it off, so I believe replacement is your only option, not flipping it.

I could be wrong.

Flipping the Ring Gear (if possible) would put the lead in Chamfers on the required end of the Ring Gear but on the wrong side of the Teeth.
