Fitting a transverse muffler

I have a double-S muffler that I have not fitted. I'm using it as a pattern to build a large-bore muffler based on a Borla can that is very close to the same size as stock in the dimensions that matter. I offered up the double-S to the muffler recess on my car. With the intermediate pipe connector and the tailpipe centered, the loop of pipe at the outer edge of the recess overlaps the recess edge by a little less than an inch (the shaded area in the photo). If it didn't interfere I would be able to get the muffler slightly higher, possibly 1/2" or a little more. The stock muffler that was on the car is long gone so I can't compare it.

Is the marked loop of pipe supposed to overlap like this, or is it supposed to tuck inside the recess and allow the muffler to sit as high as possible? I'd like to know so I know whether to run that pipe closer to the can with the new muffler, at the possible cost of some flow.

I love the sound of a torque wrench in the morning. Sounds like... progress.

... As usual , then you asked , the answer was :"Yes , sure , it's a direct fit !"
On our cars , nothing is .
For "direct fit" parts , please contact Nismo , Mazdaspeed or Mugen not Uk's specialists then speaking sportscars. You should know it ...
I buy a complete TTR exaust system , and spend twice the price to have it on the car ... A chance , my garagist had a dead twincam head to help .
"You may have to bend it , sometimes" they said... The two parts of the manifold were touching each over , this was like they were made apart ... the rest was the same way...
Now , I am happy with it but never ask my wallet !
So your's look like the same ... I think you will have to use a torch for your silencer. Far from car !
Christian.

I've been considering measuring a C5 Corvette left hand muffler for the Elan in that location. Just looking at the 2 cars next to each other it looks like it will be close, and the C5 has entry and exit of the muffler on the same side at the centerline of the car with 2 pipes exiting out the rear.

It may work without going to a custom muffler or adding the pipe to the outside edge of the car to go into a straight through muffler.
