Pink chunk in cooling system

PostPost by: mariodschy » Tue Mar 10, 2015 2:25 pm

The gasket of the thermostat housing was leaking so i changed it, when i dismanteled the thermostate i found pink chunk in the system (see the pictures). The cooling system was filled with pink cooling fluid so the chunk comes frome this, the question is why there were these nuggets.
Maybe someone has seen these befor and know the reason for this, it doesn't look like that it was mixed with another cooling fluid but i am not 100 percent sure what the former owner did.

Has somebody inadvertently mixed traditional blue antifreeze with modern OAT red antifreeze? The two don't mix and the organic acids cause precipitation of the silicate, turning the coolant to sludge...

Thats a good question maybe this is the reason, i don't think that it was mixed with blue cooling fluid because when i drained the system it was all pretty pink.
The radiator is not in best shape i'll change them, when i washed the radiator there were no pink nugetts to see.

I've washed the engine twice from waterpumpe side and from thermostat side also by turing it on the head (engine is out of chassis, oil is drained) using hot water and compresed air

I've seen clear/white jelly like deposits formed on the thermostat housing when left for a while...maybe these with pink colour picked up from the anti-freeze......any chemists in the house...Aluminium and water with what other chemical?

Can't wait for the Aussies to comment- where is Barry McKenzie when you need him?
Someone clearly chundered a raw prawn into the coolant.

Has this forum gone a bit too serious... again?

I'll report this post and see if anyone is in control.
