Difficulty inserting clutch slave cylinder pushrod.

Ongoing issues with the S4 restoration. I can't seem to get the clutch SC pushrod in place, even with the nuts turned all the way back on their threads. Not much play in the clutch fork.
Engine, bell housing, tranny all assembled and on the chassis. Body on chassis as well. Afraid something is wrong in the bell housing and I will have to tear this all apart. Maddening.
Any suggestions before I turn to my little helper pills?
Tony

Take off the C clip and slide out the the slave cylinder insert the push rod and then pull the slave back into position and then re-install the C-clip the correct way.
