Clutch Problem

PostPost by: Frank Howard » Sun Jun 01, 2008 6:20 pm

Brian,

Dot 4 brake fluid is not the problem. I use Castrol LMA which is Dot 4. "Regular" brake fluid is the problem. Most regular brake fluid attacks the rubber in Girling brake systems.

To answer your other question, Jason asked if the clutch master was on the left or right and Gene told him to go with which foot you use. That's not correct. I use my left foot on the clutch, and the clutch master is on the right.

Can't say for sure about the Elan family, but I seem to remember a similar lack of clutch in a Locust (long time ago) and being able to change without it, using an ear on engine revs.

Presumably must have started it in gear !!!

Stuart.

80 miles of traffic jams & motorways, was not on with no clutch by any stretch of technique.

Nowadays I carry a spare clutch pipe should the unlikely situation ever recur.

Gene,

No need to turn red unless you are out in that southern California sun too long. I consider this forum to be a wonderful learning experience as well as a golden opportunity for all of us to make mistakes, myself included.

Frank,
Very kind of you! Sometimes I forget my father's advice, "Engage brain before starting mouth."
