Daft question about clutch bolts

PostPost by: TroonSprint » Sun Dec 01, 2013 5:44 pm

This may seem a pretty stupid question, but are the bolts that hold the clutch cover to the flywheel standard 5/16" x 24 UNF (1/2" AF)? That's what it seems they ought to be, but new bolts I have aren't keen to enter the threads. The bolts seems to be a tiny bit too large. Before I start ruining things, can you confirm that they are the standard bolt size. Thanks.

Hi Mike

They should be 5/16" UNC x 5/8 " Long . If you have difficulty finding some, I can pop some in the post for you.

Cheers

Hi Nick, thanks very much. I didn't think they would be UNC - those are usually reserved for alloy castings. I don't have any the right size and there are no outlets near here that sell imperial fasteners, so if you can send me six I would be grateful. I will PM you my address details. How much would you like for them?

HI Mike
You will find UNC threads used on all the aluminium castings and cast iron in the Elan

Yes I would expect UNC on cast aluminium and iron. But isn't the flywheel steel?

As a rule of thumb if it screws into something - coarse. If it has a nut - fine.

There are many reasons and so many exceptions - Brake fittings for example are UNF into cast iron and aluminium.
