Pad Between Body and Chassis

Hi,
Thing 1) I need to fit one of these to my Elan. Can anyone tell me the thickness of the felt pad?
Thing 2) As I recall Leno replaced this item with closed cell foam on his build. It seems clever at first glance, no soaking up mosture to rot out the chassis. Anyone have any thoughts on this or some better idea?
Thanks much.
Best regards,
Jonny

I wasn't too keen on the felt idea either so I went with Brian Buckland's suggestion and used 1/4" thick neoprene rubber sheet. It was just the thing - soft enough to provide a good barrier, but dense so that it won't compress. It wrapped over the top of the chassis well and didn't make fitting the body any harder than usual. I have used it for other bits too, like the pads at the top of the rear suspension towers. Useful stuff, but tough to cut - I used metal shears (tin snips) to cut it. I bought my sheet from a supplier on ebay.

sorry for thread theft,..- there's supposed to be foam on the top of the rear suspension towers? is it messy looking and scrunched up? I thought it was a bodge in my car. -wedged between the top of the tower and the parcel tray?

Hi
When I refurbished my original chassis I found the matting was soaked with oil so I added a bit more and refitted it, still effective after 28 years. I did it on a shoestring in those days as money was short,
Regarding the above the towers I have filled this with sponge (old seat inserts) this cuts down road noise

No sorry, not on top of the suspension towers - brain fade again. I meant there should be pads around the diff mountings. You cut the pad to fit around the mountings. It cuts down noise and prevents fumes from entering the car. In this photo you can see the neoprene saddle pad and the rectangular pads above the diff.
