Chassis VIN Plate

PostPost by: William2 » Mon Apr 20, 2015 5:04 pm

The chassis/VIN plate on my 1971 S4 UK car is stamped with the original engine number. However, the car is now fitted with a rebuilt engine which has a different number on the block. Do I need to replace the chassis plate with a new reproduction one stamped with the correct engine number or can I leave it. I have yet to register the car and MOT it.

You can leave the VIN plate as is.

Not sure about the obligations you may be under with notifying DVLA.

This government web site https://www.gov.uk/change-vehicle-details-registration-certificate/what-evidence-to-give says that you must provide evidence of any engine number change, like the receipt for the new engine or written confirmation from a garage. In many cases with older cars, such evidence is impossible to provide. What is one supposed to do? Talk about making simple things complicated! :x
