spike in +2 seat frame

Ian,
It is common for these seat frames to crack and break at the back of the frame, maybe these spikes were added to give the tubing some extra strength.
I can add that both of my seats had failed at this point and I inserted a turned down bolt to fit snuggly in the tube and welded them in place as well as the crack in the tube.
Chris.

thanks for the reply.
although it`s a good theory,I don`t think that is their purpose.
they slide quite easily in and out of the seat frame.
If I had to guess, I would say they are to line something up with something else.
they definitely don`t add lightness,so they can`t be OEM.
