+2S front seat - repairs to frame

My drivers seat frame has snapped in the normal places - where the solid rod slots into the hollow tube on both sides of the seat frame base.
I am going to get this welded and perhaps add a stiffening plate along the top to resist the cantilever forces acting on this area (crap design this time Colin).
The main question aside from asking others how they may have tackled this is to ask whether it is possible to remove the entire seat back complete with upholstery from the base frame. The upholstery to the back is good and I don't want the ball ache of stripping it all down when it is not not needed. If I leave it in place I cannot see how any welding can be done without damaging the seat back upholstery and foam.
Comments/advice gratefully accepted.
Cheers

Jon, on my drivers seat the base tubes snapped just in front of where the upright tubes are welded on, having the same concerns as you re. the trim I inserted 18mm bolts inside the base tubes across the break and bolted in several places through the sides with 5mm bolts, works fine with no damage to the upholstery. Not sure if your failure was in the same place as mine but if you think it can help PM me and I will send some pics of the repair.
Cheers
