Body/Chassis Plate cleaning question

PostPost by: Emma-Knight » Fri Mar 09, 2007 2:11 pm

I was thinking about cleaning the chassisplate. So the question is: black paint printed on aluminium - or is it galvanised (elox) and will be able to survive thinner or aceton cleaner?

Any experience welcome...

Do not use Acetone on paint it will strip it.

I suggest you use nothing stronger than dish washing detergent/soap.
My original VIN plate is thin aluminum, no more than 0.01625" th. Over the years, the wiring harness has rubbed the black paint off 60% of the aurface area. I bought an identical looking replacement plate on eBay a couple of years ago, and it turned out to be stainless steel and much thicker, maybe 0.0625" th. Never have gotten around to stamping the VIN info on it yet.
Hope this helps,

I had good success using Simichrome metal polish to restore the lustre on my VIN plates

I bought a reproduction identification plate and had it engraved with the proper chasis number at the local trophy shop. I've save the original in a plastic bag. (Lighter fluid is a good cleaner that won't strip the original paint... just don't light it.)

It's not gasoline, but yes, it is the fuel that is designed to refuel a Zippo lighter. One brand name, at least in the U.S., is Ronsonol Lighter fuel. It removes " labels, tar, grease and oil stains" too. Real handy stuff...
