Reattaching body to chassis

PostPost by: TroonSprint » Tue Mar 17, 2015 10:01 am

I agree with Rohan. There was no way I could have got the body down with the rear carb studs in place - the glassfibre beside the engine bears witness to that! . You will find that there is absolutely no wiggle room sideway because the front turrets locate the body exactly. You can't push it a little to one side - it won't go. Fortunately the studs on mine were only finger tight.

I have tried using the 2 nut method of stud removal but failed. Do all the suds need removing or just the rear 2 or 4? Also is there any danger of snapping a flange off the head, God forbid!!? Les, have sent you an email.

There is no danger of snaping a flange off the head Will, but there is a possibility of the stud shearing.

Having said that, it is unlikely, but you are the expert in drilling out  .........with my guidance

Heat around the stud, fit the stud remover that I am going to hire you  on with your 1/2" bar, or do you need to hire that as well  I am rolling my eyes again, do not take offence ! a quick turn on the bar, thats what I do on a Friday night, and your stud will be removed. Simples.

Oh yes, remove all studs, its just a lot easier like that.

Easy mistake.......I fitted exhaust manifold studs - they are very similar but shorter! I came to mount the carbs and said well, goodness me! (or similar) I secured them with thread lock so I was really grateful that they came out okay (2 nut method).

Great news! Thanks to Les's magical stud removal tool I got them all out. I also took the advice of using a bit of heat with a hot air gun.

I know it sounds a bit extreme but if there is any risk of damaging the head for what it takes to remove it life is so much easier with it off.

That said if you can get the studs out then your good to go.

4 of us have just lifted the body back on the chassis but there seems to be a foul somewhere near the back end of the car. Looking underneath at the transmission tunnel chassis flange the body is sitting fully down at the front ok but is about 1" above the flange towards the rear. Tomorrow I will jack up the chassis on axle stands and remove the rear wheels to try and see where the problem lies. I managed to remove the body from the chassis when I started the restoration so it's a bit of a mystery. I am pretty sure it wouldn't be the felt saddle over the tunnel causing it. Hopefully I will find out tomorrow.

Don't you just love the pics of guys working on their Elans in S. California and the like, always in shorts and T shirts! I've done a couple of hours fettling in the garage today and was sure glad of the Berghaus fleece!

I do not know what flange you are talking about Will, but in the past, when the body would not sit down completely at the rear, I found it caught up where the top seat belt mounting bracket meets with the round spacer thingy in the body. Have a look.

Found the gremlin. The chassis wasn't sitting down properly on the chassis because a P clip bolt head I had put in as one of the brake pipe supports was snagging the bodywork near the front end. All sorted now and body all bolted back in place. Onwards and upwards!!
