Spyder chassis, engine too low

PostPost by: rgh0 » Mon Sep 22, 2014 9:49 pm

The high lift special engine mount is the one with the straight sides in the photo above and it lifts the engine higher when installed in a normal Lotus chassis on the engine block and up the other way and also in a spyder chassis when mounted upside down on the chassis with an arm to the engine.

Hi Norman, just to be clear, the one on the right in your picture, the special lotus part, is the one that's mounted to the chassis (not the block) on the carb side. Mounted like that (ie as per your pic) you can see that the two eye holes in the plate are higher than on the standard mount, which gives the higher lift to the block on that side.

I think what's further confusing the issue is that my particular type of hi-lift mount (if you look at my most recent pics) also has curved sides. I'm thinking it may be an original mount from the factory, judging by the rock hard cracked rubbers therein. New one being ordered from SJ.

hi out there - was just wondering how much loss (in total value) you'd have to put up with when you're forced to use an aftermarket item such as a spyder chassis?? here in switzerland you'll only get a veterans MOT (which is valid for 6 years!!) for a car with an original chassis: thus making the car half its' actual value: how is this elsewhere?? sandy 36 / 4982

In Australia what sub frame (aka chassis) you use - original lotus style ( they were not made by lotus either then or now) or the Spyder style is up to the owner. No impact on registration or MOT equivalent requirements. Impact on market value of one style versus the other is debatable and probably depends on the car. i.e an otherwise stock standard S1 Elan is probably worth more with an original style sub frame. A later Elan or Plus 2 is probably worth more with a Spyder sub frame. But then we're not into the high prices and originality fetish like you see in the UK
