Galvanised frame - Paint or no paint?

PostPost by: 65ginetta » Mon Aug 08, 2011 1:58 am

I replaced my heavily corroded S3 chassis with a LR galvanized replacement. I sand blasted the new frame to remove any surplus or excess galvanising, hot soda wash and then powder coated. The powder coat has excellent adherence and I am very satisfied with the results. I have also made a sample 200 hour salt spray test to verify the powder coat durability on a galvanized surface. Despite the encouraging results it"s still dependent upon the powder coaters attention to detail.

Wots a tanner?

Like AussieJohn I used Hammerite when I replace the original chassis / subframe with a shiny galvanised one back in the 80's. It also fell off without any trouble - and continues to do so to the present day. Not one of my better decisions.

Our "friend" from north of the border really meant,

"As bright as a new Sixpence"

A "Tanner" was the slang name for it, just as a "Bob" was a Shilling & a "Quid" was a pound
A sixpenny piece or bit was part of the pre-decimal GB currency & was worth half a Shiling (which was 12 Pennies) of which there were 20 to the Pound.

All so simple to understand really

I guess you already knew that Stuart, but maybe our friends across "the Pond" may have been scratching their heads a bit

65ginetta: that chassis assembly is looking beautiful! And thanks for the description of the chassis treatment. I take it, then, that you elected to use a light grey "metal colour" powder coating, no?

And thanks, John, for the clarification of the pre-decimal monetary units. Truthfully, I didn't know. Interesting how that number 12 was important to the imperial system.

I painted mine using Hammerite special metals primer for galvanised steel, then used red garage door paint. Its a good, hard finish! Previously I did what someone else did and painted one with red "smooth" Hammerite and like his, it just "fell off" after about 3 months...! But my current one is lasting very well. It definitely looks better painted, IMHO.
