My S3 has and I know it was a kit originally. Scratched on though, so it could have been done by whoever assembled the kit or by Ian Walkers who checked it out.

I just took a look at my elan plate and the engine number is NOT engraved on it after all.
It was originally a Kit.

Mine Cheshunt plate is similar to Andrew's without the 'US 65 ' bit. I don't have an engine number either. However mine appears to be engraved as at the end of each non round figure there is a start and finish dot. The person doing the engraving seems to have been better at some letters and numbers than others. The C and O in CH NO are very accurate as is the number 5 and 1 and the / after 26 but the sides of the H and N are really wobbly as are all the rest of the numbers. Mine is a unit and chassis number a little earlier. I've no idea if was a kit or not. There are also dots after the CH and NO, as CH.NO. but they are about a quarter up from the bottom of the letters.
I expect the plates were done in batches by different people with time on their hands........or perhaps by 'helpers' in the school holidays!
