how heavy is the chassis?

PostPost by: jeff jackson » Wed Apr 10, 2013 6:38 pm

Hi all,
How heavy is a plus 2 chassis? Could it be transported on a sturdy roof rack?
I'm sure I have seen a picture on the forum of one strapped to someones Volvo, but may have dreamt it.
Any help gratefully received.

Salut Jeff

I think about 45kg so no problem for a roof rack - most of them are rated 60kg+. People regularly transport them; a French mate brought one over from Spyder and I recently delivered one. The wider the roof bars the better for stability and strap it down well with ratchet webbing.

Don't try to lift it on and off the rack yourself - you'll kill your back and scratch your car.

The Lotus-type chassis might be more prone to wind - don't know.

Hi Vernon,
I must admit to being prone to wind, so I guess that makes for a perfect match.
Thanks for the advice on the chassis, it's much appreciated.
Kind regards

This is an Elan (not +2) chassis on its way to get chemically stripped. It's probably not that much lighter than a +2 chassis, and I was able to heave it up there without too much difficulty. Room for the bike as well.

I love the sound of a torque wrench in the morning. Sounds like... progress.

45kgs sounds about right for a Spyder +2 unit. Easily fits on a roof rack as per attached pic.

I have transported my +2 chassis on roof racks on a Honda Civic. Perhaps not the brightest idea but it worked.

Hi All,
Thanks for the replies,(and the pictures) the one I am transporting is an original +2 Lotus Chassis, so I am keeping fingers crossed it will be OK!
Kind regards
