Lower The Body Onto The Chassis - All Was Going Well....

PostPost by: ceejay » Mon Oct 01, 2012 10:58 am

Has this ever happened to you?

You've spent many months completely rebuilding the rolling chassis, and the elan
body is to the stage where they are ready to be finally mated together for the last
time during the restoration.... then you discover that not all of the bobbins line up
with the chassis bolt holes, in this case there was just one that was well out.

As a matter of fact, the beginning of last month.

Similar problem but just a minor different approach. About 2 hours from start to finish.

I think the best method is to trial fit the body to the chassis very early in the rebuild process. Even if you are putting the same body/chassis pair back together it gives an opportunity to correct the fairly common problem of the chassis not being centralised in the body (which leads to unequal tyre to wheel arch clearance).

In my case it was purely an oversight, the body had been on and off chassis several times over
the past few months during the rebuild and I should have checked that all bobbins and chassis bolt holes
were matched.... but you know how it is.... you sometimes forget to do the most basic things.
And that to my mind is a good enough reason to have a detailed check list to tick things off
as you go along.
