Frame Interference

In the midst of my restoration, the body has been going on and off the frame numerous times. Occasionally it gets stuck. My good friend Greg just noticed the body with its new front clip (of which I'll forever be thankful to Ross Robbins for) is hitting these welded on bungs. I don't remember seeing them before. What are they for and do they even belong there?
I did go in the back yard and took a look at an old rusty frame I have back there. They are on there too. Is there a difference in body tunnels that these hit my new front clip? Yet I don't see any scratches on my old front clip, whereas they are creating some pretty deep gouges in my new front clip.
Many thanks, Frank

Hi Frank
I do not know what the original intent of these holes were for, but I assume that it may have been for some sort of jig location during manufacturing the chassis. The later chassis that I have only have the hole without the piece welded into it. Here are a couple of pictures of the various frames that were easy to access. Only one has the weldments installed, I got the chassis with 36/6292 (aka ugly flared coupe, Canada Coupe), The other 3 are a bit later in production. I have not seen it used for anything. If it's a problem, grind it down so it's not a problem.

Gary, thank you! That makes perfect sense. Greg just got his newly painted shell back from the body shop yesterday and he says his S4 doesn't have them. I would much rather grind them down than do more fiberglass work. But I didn't want to do that if they were for something important that I couldn't remember............which happens more often lately. Ha! Time to get out the red primer touch up paint!
Many thanks! Frank
