Galvanised frame - Paint or no paint?

Bill asked this question, here:

"Is it not considered necessary to paint a galvanised chassis then? For those of you who have fitted galvanised chassis, how well are they standing up to wear/corrosion?"

I was re-reading Miles Wilkins' book "How to Restore Paintwork" -

"Overpainting is not recommended....until the galvanising has weathered - which usually takes about six months" He goes on to show a frame being Waxoyled "Spraying at 40 psi ensures that oil is blasted into every crevice"

So, to get back to Bills' original question. Have frames needed painting for other than cosmetic reasons, or has waxoyling (or other) proven to be sufficient?

I painted one when rebuilding; it was at least 10 years on the car but I still used a primer for over galvanising then hammerite; the hammerite fell off with very little effort. I would not paint again, can you powdercoat over galvanising?

Has to be the main (only?) disappointment with the factory-supplied replacement frames: the galvanizing is a mixed blessing due to it's inability to hold paint.

Seems like you have to use some pressure-sprayed rust preventative product on the internal surfaces, accept the look of the galvanizing where exposed, and leave it at that.

u will need to treat ur galv chassis with finnegans or something similar before u paint it as paint wont adhere to the galv if ur elan is series 1 or 2 paint it red oxide later cars had black chassis remember to paint the suspension the correct colours as well if u need any info just ask

Hi

There is a special etching compound you need to use on galvanised steel before overpainting. It turns the grey effect to very dark blue or black from memory. It's called "something" wash- sorry I can't recall it but any galvanising firm will probably sell you the stuff- it's usually in 1 gallon sizes and not expensive.

I coated mine with two coats of Satin Black 121 Epoxy mastic. Its standing up very well. In fact I tried to get it off at one part and it was a bugger to remove.

I would def' do the same again. It looks great and has got to be protecting the fame.

The smooth satin black hammerite on the other hand has been very disappointing and the few areas I used it on (not the frame) are now up for a re-do.. Front brake backplates for E.G.

sorry grumpybodger i didnt realise you had to be an OAP to own an elan only joking just hope grizzly gets the info on time before he paints his chassis look forward to meeting you at donington cheers

Alex,

Was this on a virgin, but weathered frame, to give belt & braces protection from the off...or was it after the frame had been in service and showed that it needed it?

Hi Guys,

To answer the question... The frame was fitted to the car in 99/2000... It was nicely weathered (Read manky!) and had to get a good clean all over. Pressure washed 1st then all over rotary wire brushed to bring it up shiney. I was amazed at it. It was polished!! It shone like a tanner.

The Epoxy mastic sticks like S to a B...

Still like the day it was applied.. The parts I can see (and wipe!) anyway... LOL...
