Chassis rear uprights

Just a quickie...
Has anyone installed a rear strut brace? (or a front one for that matter?)
Can anyone with a Plus2 with the body off give me the dimension between the top of the rear uprights?
Thanks
Joihn

Hi John,
I think the dimensions may be in the workshop manual, I seem to recall seeing them there. I have a new Spyder chassis with the body currently suspended above it, I'll see if I can measure the spacing this evening.
On an earlier Spyder chassis (a converted stressed skin model) I remember checking the tower spacing and I was surprised at how easily the front towers flexed - that's why I think the manual has the dimension. A strut would be a great idea for handling but rather intrusive?

John,
Do you mean in addition to the standard brace? (Item 6 in the attached page from the Service Parts List.) I admit the standard one is not perfect but it does add a lot of stiffness.

Hi Guys,
I had one fitted onto the front of one of my +2's. It was square secton steel tube and passed just above the waterpump and was slightly shaped to allow fitting onto the front turrets and bolted through into the chassis with a slightly longer setscrew.
It was a success and was still there when I sold the car. Thought it took out quite a lot of flexing.

John,
The two 7/16" UNF bolts that pass through the body shell and into the tapped holes in the front faces of the rear frame towers also pass through the stiffener. So it is a sandwich, stiffener, then body shell, then frame going front-to-back. The stiffener itself is a hat-section pressing and it is pretty stiff. The stiffener is hidden just behind the vertical section of the rear seat.

Many thanks Russ
Looks like it's back seats out this weekend as I'm sure there is nothing like that there in front of the petrol tank?

Hi, rear strut brace is standard for the Plus 2 (at least S130). For the front, I have most of the bits machined up for a brace to go between the two 3/8" fasteners (between body and chassis uprights). Not convinced it will be completely effective because of the crank/offset required to clear engine. This puts a bending load on the brace so it will not be nearly as stiff as a direct compression/tension strut. I also have a brace that fits across the top of the gearbox.
