Handbrake rods

PostPost by: lightwait26 » Wed Dec 29, 2021 9:30 pm

I am wondering about the fasteners to attach the handbrake rods - currently, the outboard ends have a small UNF bolt and nut, the inboard end has a small clevis pin retained by a cotter pin.

Is any of this correct? I must say that the clevis pins are a lot less fiddly than the bolts.

sounds correct. The parts manual should show the right fittings

That is correct Art. Replace with stainless items if you do not want those fasteners to turn to mush in short order.

You know Art, you really shouldn't post so often, lol.

Happy New Year.

Don't lose the little bushes that go on those outboard end bolts

If there is any looseness then replace the bolts/pins. All the holes in my original rods and T were tear-drops but I reamed them circular again (and made non-standard pins to fit) and the hand brake has been perfect for 40 years. All the grief about the handbrake is unnecessary if the clearances are small and well greased.

+1. These are easy to lose/miss and made all the difference to my handbrake.

The Elan +2 parts manual at http://www.rdent.com has a breakdown for the Handbrake in the Brakes section (it's missing in the Elan section). This shows the bush - part No. 3.

It also shows the clevis/cotter at the inboard end of the rod and the bolt/nut at the caliper end.

I agree with Quart Meg Miles, if everything is tight the handbrake works fine. Well, 1960's fine. But it took me a number of battles to win the war.
