S3 Brake Caliper Overhaul

PostPost by: simonriley11 » Sat Mar 06, 2021 12:08 pm

I am about to overhaul the front and rear calipers with new pistons and seals my 1966 S3.
The workshop manual says that once you've removed the pads you can pump the pistons out to the disc to ease removal of the old pistons once the calipers are on the bench. Is this true as I don't want the piston to pop out beyond the seal and end up with a flood of brake fluid!

I usually remove the pads and try to get the pistons out at least half way before losing hydraulic pressure. You can use g clamps or bits of wood etc. to hold back earlier pistons that have moved. When you disconnect/remove the calipers drain them into a container. There will always be residual fluid when you finally pump them the last bit. Best of luck.
