Rear S1 brake rotor's?

PostPost by: nomad » Tue Jan 26, 2016 2:31 am

Well, as usual I'm late to the party and just found out that the early large diameter bolt pitch circle rear brake disc's haven't been available for decades. If I can't find at least one good used rear disc have I any other options?? Considered a tacked in plug and re-drilling a later disc but not sure that could be done successfully.

Hi Kurt
Another option is to weld up and re-drill the shafts to suit the later disk / donut pitch circle. A lot easier welding up and re-drilling the steel of the shafts than the cast iron disks

However to avoid confusion on assembly you probably should do all the PCD's for the intermediate shafts and diff shafts also to make them all the same as the later cars which is a bit more work

cheers

Very good points, Rohan, but I have the axle shaft's back in the housings with new bearings and the hub torqued on. Given how hard they were to get apart the first time I'd be reluctant to tackle it again. I think I'm hoping someone has one that is still within spec or I may refit my thin one!

The other option is to track down the actual manufacturer and get a disk un-drilled or drilled to the early car specification.

The usual Lotus suppliers should be able to tell you where they get them from or if not do a special order for you. It should not be to much of a problem as they are hand made in small quantities already and leaving out the drill step should be easy !

As another thought is there any reason why the required set of holes should not be drilled between the existing holes in a 'nornal' disc? I would have thought there would be ample material left even with 6 holes at 60 degrees increments. Easy enough to drill cast iron. It may offend the eye slightly but should be invisible when installed.

Rohan, the points you make about small quantities and ease of manufacture is exactly why I would not expect a problem with finding new ones. I may have to talk a bit more with our suppliers.

Mike, if you were talking about the front rotors what you suggest would work but the rears only have small tabs for the drill holes.

Kurt,

I have a disc. Is it worth shipping from the UK?

I thank Paddy for his kind offer but PM with him discovers that what he had won't work so I guess I'm back in the hunt!

I would think that someone would have these stashed after changing to issue 18 rear hubs and axles. Probably do but it seems everyone is winter hibernating! :(

Yes, I guess most people are just hanging onto hard-to-get bits even though they're unlikely to need them again.

Thanks, I have a used one on the way. Have an issue with the one that I thought was good as well though. It has about 0.010 run out. Might be contacting him.
