Handbrake Knurled nut - How?

Hello all,
Lost my handbrake a while back and am keen to remove the pads as I think they (or something) is rubbing. My driver side hub doesn't rotate as freely as the other.
Read the manual on rear caliper, but am defeated at Step 1, as I can't loosen the knurled nut holding the handbrake caliper lever at the back.
Any tips on loosening it, or am I missing something obvious?

If you mean number 13 in the first diagram, it actually has a small HEX portion at the outer end and can usually be undone/adjusted with a thin box spanner like the one originally supplied in the toolkit.
I find I can also adjust it with an offset ring spanner.

As Bill says a ring spanner of the appropriate size works well and is the tool I've always used for the job.
Unless seized on the thread they shouldn't need much effort to turn.

Thanks all. Hadn't the right ring spanner but just about reached it with a socket. The outside lever was seized up, and taking the pads out has solved the symptoms (wobble at v low speed). Think I need at least one disc.
Thanks again for all the responses.

Don't leave the nut and little spring clip loose on the caliper. They are made of unobtainium here in the USA. I'm thinking of replacing mine with nylock nuts. Most hardware stores carry nylocks in coarse threads, in this case, 5/16- 18 TPI.
