tandem master tip valve help

PostPost by: mini64 » Sat Jun 02, 2012 8:51 pm

can someone give some how-to on rebuilding the tandem master cylinder - here is the problem I am having: when I tighten down the large hex "set screw" retainer onto the tipping valve the unit locks up - that is, i cant push the push rod. do you not tighten this hex retainer? or do i have the tipping valve in the wrong location? searching our archives i saw someone mentioning pushing in the pushrod a bit to remove the tipping valve - so do i need to push in the pushrod before installing this valve? i just set the valve in after assembling the two pistons and pushrod and all.

then i looked at my manual image, see below, and it almost looks like the spring on the tipping valve is put on the valve after putting the stem of the valve through the hex retainer - i'm quite sure i didnt dissasemble it this way. this is incorrect, right?

I haven't done mine in a few years, but my recollection is that you need to push the pistons in with your finger and look down the tipping valve hole until they are in far enough, then insert the tipping valve and everything then stays in place. Dan

that was it - you need to push in the piston a hair (1/4") before dropping in the tipping valve. thanks everyone!
