Brake fluid in Girling servo.

Evening all, have a question regarding the brakes on a 1970 S4 FHC
Having overhauled the Girling Servo recently everything was working brilliantly until one afternoon when a cloud of white smoke came out of the back of the elan along with a loss of brakes. However on restarting the Elan the brakes were working just as before!
So can anyone explain how the fluid came to be in the Servo?
I Have since stripped the servo and all seals are still intact, not torn or misplaced and no other signs of wear / damage.
Any explainations gratefully recieved.
