Girling Vs Lockheed brake servo's

Hi David,
I had to replace my Girling with a Lockheed unit a couple of years ago.
There are a few things that you have to be aware of, one of which is the orientation of the Lockheed unit.
(A tiny bit of brake pipe bending was needed)
This is explained in the installion instructions that come with the unit.
Also, do a search of this forum and you'll find some specifics listed by Se?n Murray on what unit is needed.
I'm not sure that an MGB unit will be the right one, mine was listed as an "Elan +2, Jaguar etc. " servo.
I have had no problems with my unit and it seems to behave as well as my old Girling did
Best of luck,
Peter

Hi Folk's,
Slightly off topic/sort of I am using a PBR Booster as fitted to lots of Australian cars I think mine is a VH 44 they are reasonably easy to get hold of and not terribly expensive not sure how mine is going to work as it came with the car as a basket case, should be driving it within a month or two.

I rebuilt the Girling unit - a satifying job that doesnt involve lying on your back under the car - gives you the opportunity to refresh the painted bits and clean some areas under the bonnet you cant normally get at - also preserves the original look.

I replaced the Girling units. I was told they are problematic. My original units were in terrible rusty condition. I still have them if someone needs them.
The difficulty for me was mounting two Lockheed servos where the two Girlings had been mounted. The Lockheed units are a bit larger and as the space was limited the task seemed impossible and certainly less than satisfactory. My solution was to position one unit in the nose. I used the remote breather cap included with each booster with a hose and fabricated the appropriate mount. Works well.
When air conditioning was installed in the +2 the importer repositioned one booster in the nose to make room for A/C components.
It has rained here for days with more in store. I took the +2 for a short drive during a break in the weather. All works well and no oil leaks. I was concerned as the timing chain, timing chain gears and front covers had been replaced recently.
The high output electric fan fitted prior to the winter is working very well. A great improvement over the smaller fan I had initially used.

Bob, completely off topic so when can start a new one...
Your comments on air conditioning are very interesting for me. I've fabricated up mounts for a compressor and got the belt drive system all worked out. I have room for the condensor (sitting in front of the radiator) so this bit should work out OK. The next major item to locate/integrate would be the evaporator core. Do you know if the air-con conversions place the evaporator within the standard (Smiths?) sheetmetal heater box? If yes, what about water/condensate drainage.
Regards
Gerry

Hi
Yes, I think the MGB unit does not provide as much boost as the Jag one normally used on the +2. Whether this actually makes much difference in practice could only be answered by someone who has actually fitted one. I guess you would just have to shove harder on the pedal, and many +2's are running around with no servo at all.
Another question at Bob; If you have two servo's are they both the same as the single one or smaller? My car has only single circuit brakes and I have though about upgrading to duel circuit.
Cheers,
David
