Handbrake cable fouling pre-engaged starter

Noticed while underneath the car this morning [doing the tracking] that the handbrake cable is touching the pre-engaged starter that I have fitted. I've got a Spyder chassis.

Looks as though I need to fabricate some sort of bracket to hold the cable away from the starter.

Has anyone else had the same problem and found a solution?

Mine touches too - so what's the problem? It can't possibly do any damage to the starter motor.

My friend who is doing some final checks with me pre MOT suggested that this could be an MOT failure. He was concerned that over time the cable might damage the starter casing [or vice versa].

Do I presume you had no problems at MOT time?

OK Richard, it would take about a million driving hours for the cable to do any significant damage to the starter, but if you're that worried about it, split a plastic drinking straw down it's whole length and slip it over the cable. Alternatively, place a self-adhesive pad of some descrition along the body of the starter.

And my MOT guy is very thorough and has not commented about it during the last 3 years.

Same here - I split a length of thin rubber hose and slid it over the area that was touching.

No probs, with stater, handbrake or MOT man.

The Spyder handbrake cable mounting point is slightly higher than the orginal chassis location. My starter clears the cable on the elan with Lotus chassis but hits on the plus 2 with a spyder chassis. I made a braket out of 12mm square tube that bolted trought the spyder cable point and and I mounted the cable about 20mm lower to clear the starter

I had to relocate the cable as the preengage starter I use is a Bosch unit and the handbrake cable runs very close to the live power cable connection - dont ask me how I know the handbrake cable melts if it shorts the starter power cable.!!!
