Brake caliper restoration

PostPost by: richard sprint » Wed May 20, 2009 9:47 pm

I have just received my full set of brake calipers and servo from Classic Auto motive - Cheshire - tel 01625 860925 all I can say is that they are simply like new.

One of the front calipers had one of the pad pin location holes missing so they fitted a new half - the calipers were presure tested and all are spot on to specification.

Credit where its due and they recommended that I spray the units with clear laquer to preserve the appearance.

A very satisfactory outcome particularly as they were in very poor condition and unused for possibly 20 years...

What do they charge to recondition a pair of calipers and do they use stainless pistons?

Cheers

I did mine myself, scrubbed the rust off over a couple of months until spotless then painted in high temp caliper paint. New pistons, seals, pad pins and nipples. I don't think it was any cheaper but I know they are like new.

SJ Sportscars list 16PB calipers for ?56 each which is pretty cheap.

Jason/dusty

I had intended to restore the calipers myself but with the broken section and on inspection the bores on one caliper showed internal signs of corrosion I decided to let the experts do the job.

If the bores had been perfect and without the broken section I probably would have continued in house.

I was not happy to take on the servo as special equipment is required.

I do not know if the pistons are stainless (best to check with Classic Auto) but certainly the pins on the rear calipers have been replaced with SS.

The restoration job you have done on the front calipers looks really good and is a credit to you - I think the decision should rest on the condition of them in the first place and mine were very poor.

The cost of the front calipers was 38.00 each which is excellent value when one takes into account the cost of the repair kit?

The rears were 125.00 each and the servo 185.00 plus vat and carriage.

For the condition of mine I consider it was money well spent...

That's a bargain. :o

My seals were ?7 + Pistons ?17 + Bleed screws ?1.25 + pad pins ?4 = Total ?29.25 per caliper plus paint and time.
For less than ?10 per caliper I would have got them to do the work.
