Front disk brake dimensions

PostPost by: GrUmPyBoDgEr » Wed Jun 06, 2007 10:41 am

Can somebody tell me the diameter & thickness of standard +2 Front disks please?
I don't have access to my own car at the moment.

Thanks in advance
John

Thanks a lot.

Well thats decided it for me now. :D
I'm going to take the plunge & go for a pair of Wilwood 4 pot calipers & 265mm slotted & cross drilled disks before I leave this green country for the "Fatherland"

Cheers

John,
Not quite sure why my post from yesterday didn't get through.

The Lotus workshop manual specifies 10", 25.4cm diameter disks but doesn't mention the thickness. They are more concerned with runout (usually caused by bad manufacture or bad fitting) than thickness. In the days of asbestos based pads, the disks wore much less than they do now.

Thought I'd better check my measuring again and the discs have grown overnight

They measure 245mm diameter, so 9mm down on spec from the workshop manual.

Dave,
The manual is not famed for its accuracy so I checked some disks off my car - 24.4cm, sorry to have worried you. Looks like it's a nominal 10"!

The thickness is usually more important than the diameter as long as the pads sit within the circumference and I don't have a spec.

When I changed the front disc's on my Sprint the spec was cast into the original disc's and says:
MIN DISC THICKNESS .325 INS WITH .230 INS MIN THICKNESS OF PAD & BACKPLATE ASSY
I know the +2 has a larger diam disc but I think the thickness is the same.

Thank you all for your research & replies.
I've finally taken the plunge & after placing my order, rec'd my Wilwood front brakes within 24 hours.
It will take a little longer before I get around to fitting them.
I will be replacing Elan+2 brakes which i fitted to my Zetec engined Elan S4.
Here' a bit of info on the Wilwood set up sold as a kit for Triumph based Caterham front brakes.
4 pot calipers CNC machined from Al. Alloy, black anodised, weight per caliper 1020g.
Cylinder dia. 35mm
Disks 265mm dia. with optional cross drilling & slots.
Attached some pics of the calipers.

Cheers
John

Here's a link to the brake supplier:- http://www.rallydesign.co.uk/catalog/default.php

I wil try again to attach the pics.

Richard
