Girling Mk2b Servo

I have recently acquired a Girling Mk2b servo that is quite old but in excellent condition - externally. Before I go to the trouble of installing it, I'd like to open it up and check the diaphragms and slave cylinder. It looks like the metal belt around the centre of the servo part can be prised off. Is this advisable, and are there any gotchas to look out for?

Matt,
The band CAN be prised off and refitted but it is a bit of a mission, the usual way is to cut it, weld on two tags at right angles with bolt holes and clamp it back together.
There is a small ball in the piston area that tends to get lost so watch out and by the way the kit is EXPENSIVE!
Brian.

I did a recon on my Gerling servo, and the kit came with a replacement band which screwed closed. However, the band was the wrong diameter, so (having cut the original band off), I simply made two lugs by bending up the ends of the original band at 90 degrees, and put a bolt through to hold it tight.
This has worked fine for over 6 years now.....
The recon kits are indeed expensive, but complete & effective in my experience.

It is possible to move the band round, not by much, until its pressed-in tabs align with cut-outs in the lips of the two halves of the housing, then the ring can be removed intact. Replacing it is the reverse of the above. I can't remember if it only turns one way or either way.

Thanks for the advice chaps. I did try to move the band around but it was tooooo frustrating by far and I didn't get it to move at all. So the cutter came out and all was revealed.
I have a refurb kit inbound, so I'll report back when the job is done, or before if I hit another snag!

There is a company called something like Norton Brake Services who can supply all the rubber seals for a reasonable sum (around ?30) which is a lot cheaper than the full Girling kits. Watch out as some kits come with the large rubber diaphragm and some don't.

(if you leave out the little ball bearing when you rebuild your servo, the servo unit 'pushes back' when you press the brakes......and you feel real silly)
