Size of brake master cylinder reservoir- what's the signific

PostPost by: worzel » Fri Mar 01, 2013 1:00 pm

Hi

I've traced thru the archives but can't find any previous identical question so here goes.

I've just bought a 0.7 brake master cylinder from BurtonPower. It's a girling item but the fluid reserve is smaller than usual- I've not checked properly but it looks similar in size to the clutch m/cylinder.

Does this really matter- I'm trying to think of a sound reason why in practice the difference in fluid reserves might impact (not the best phrase I know in view of the question). The pushrod can only travel so far anyway before the outlet is blocked and pressure feeds to the calipers so why the difference in fluid capacities?

regards

Hi- again.

Just had a thought- is the difference in reservoirs something to do with the drop in level caused by pad wear- a larger resevoir giving more safety margin for careless owners who don't check the pad wear too often?

I wouldn't use a clutch master cylinder for the brakes....not enough reserve of fluid for my comfort, especially with single line brakes.

I'm surprised burtons would be prepared to sell this as a brake m/c

John,
The Burton catalogue shows both large and small reservoir Girling master cylinders - maybe they have sent you the wrong one ?

Hi

Thanks for the replies.

Strange- I've dealt with Burton before on many occasions and never had a problem with them. Maybe this ad slipped thru the net as it almost certainly is only suitable for a clutch system. Anyway I'm getting them to send the correct cylinder (almost twice the price of the one I bought).

Regards
